Income Generating Activities

Our Approach

Our income-generating initiatives focus on strengthening the entire food system—from production to consumption—so that families can produce more nutritious food, earn reliable income, and reinvest in their households and communities. Increased production not only improves household earnings but also enhances local food availability, contributing to better public health outcomes across the region. [lifesavingcenter.org]

We prioritize:

  • Sustainable agricultural practices suited to local geography and climate
  • Hands-on training and technical support for smallholder farmers
  • Market-oriented production to ensure surplus crops can generate income
  • Inclusive participation, with special attention to women and marginalized groups

Through this integrated approach, families gain both immediate income opportunities and long-term economic resilience.

Transforming Communities Through Income-Generating Activities

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals and Nutrition Frameworks:

Sustainable livelihoods are essential to building healthy, resilient communities. Our Income-Generating Activities (IGAs) program empowers vulnerable and marginalized households by increasing income, improving food security, and strengthening nutrition through locally appropriate agricultural solutions. By integrating agriculture, nutrition, and market access, we support families in moving from short-term survival to long-term self-reliance.

In the mountainous regions of Nepal, nearly 62% of households rely on agriculture as their primary source of income. However, traditional farming practices, limited inputs, and poor market access often result in low yields and chronic food insecurity. Our approach addresses these challenges holistically—linking agricultural productivity with nutrition outcomes and community well-being.

Alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Our Income-Generating Activities directly contribute to global development priorities outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including:

Nutrition-Sensitive and Nutrition-Specific Programming

Our work follows nutrition-sensitive agriculture principles, ensuring that increases in food production also lead to improved nutrition outcomes. By linking income generation with household food consumption, school feeding, and nutrition education, we align with global nutrition frameworks such as the UNICEF conceptual framework on malnutrition and the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) approach.

This integrated model ensures that:

  • Increased income leads to improved dietary quality
  • Nutritious foods are consumed locally, not just sold
  • Children, pregnant women, and vulnerable groups benefit directly

Our Integrated Approach

Our income-generating initiatives strengthen the entire food system—from production to consumption—so households can grow nutritious food, earn reliable income, and reinvest in their families and communities. We focus on:

  • Sustainable agricultural practices adapted to local geography
  • Practical, hands-on training and ongoing technical support
  • Market-oriented production to generate surplus income
  • Strong linkages between agriculture, nutrition, and education

This approach creates lasting improvements in food security, income stability, and community resilience.

Key Income-Generating Activities

Potato Farming:

Potato farming is a cornerstone livelihood activity in Nepal’s mountain communities. We support farmers with improved seed varieties, soil management techniques, and better cultivation practices. Increased productivity enhances household food availability while surplus crops provide reliable income through local markets.

Greenhouse Vegetable Production:

Greenhouse farming allows families to grow vegetables year-round, even in harsh climates. Participants receive training in greenhouse construction, crop management, pest control, and water efficiency. This activity improves household nutrition by increasing access to fresh vegetables while creating steady income opportunities, particularly for women.

✅ Increased income from selling surplus produce
✅ Reduced food costs and greater climate resilience

Mushroom Farming and School Feeding Linkages:

Mushroom farming is a low-cost, high-nutrition micro-enterprise, ideal for households with limited land. Community members receive seed money, starter kits, and training on mushroom cultivation, harvesting, and marketing.

Beyond household income and consumption, mushrooms produced through this program are also supplied to a nearby school feeding site, located close to the mushroom farming area. This linkage:

  • Improves dietary diversity and protein intake for school-age children
  • Strengthens local food systems by sourcing food locally
  • Connects smallholder producers directly with community nutrition programs
  • Reinforces the nutrition impact of income-generating activities

This model demonstrates how livelihoods programs can actively support education and child nutrition outcomes.

Building Long-Term Resilience and Nutrition Security:

By increasing agricultural productivity and household income, families are able to:

  • Improve daily nutrition and dietary diversity
  • Support children’s education and health expenses
  • Invest in better farming inputs and small enterprises
  • Build resilience to climate and economic shocks

When livelihoods, nutrition, and education are integrated, the benefits extend beyond individual households: strengthening entire communities.

Lasting Impact:

Income-generating activities are not just economic interventions; they are pathways to dignity, health, and opportunity. Aligned with global development and nutrition frameworks, our program enables families to nourish their children, sustain their livelihoods, and build resilient communities for generations to come.
